Heritage Boatyard

Preserving and promoting Nova Scotia's South Shore wooden boatbuilding history.

Our Story

Our History Explored

The Heritage Boatyard Co-op is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Nova Scotia's South Shore wooden boatbuilding history. We do this by hosting and attending wooden boat activities, promoting the wooden boatbuilders of Nova Scotia, researching our wooden shipbuilding heritage, and learning and teaching the skills of traditional wooden boat building.

Our funding depends on businesses, government, and individuals who share our belief in keeping our history alive. We are a 100 percent volunteer organization. A CO-OP lifetime membership is $100 — a great way to both support us and participate in our activities.

Enjoy our tour and we hope you leave with a better understanding and appreciation of Mahone Bay's deep-rooted history of boat builders. Come visit us soon.

Our Workshop

The Boatbuilding Shed

Our 16 ft × 20 ft boatbuilding shed sits on the Mahone Bay Marina property. It was built the traditional way using local hemlock and post-and-beam joinery — a working space for the restoration and construction of small wooden boats using the skills and methods passed down through generations.

A community-built workshop, raised by local businesses, the Town of Mahone Bay, the Marina, and a steady volunteer base.
